Tomorrow starts the countdown to Christmas!

I’m so glad I planned ahead this year and decided to make my own Advent calendar.

Actually I got a little lucky since the only thing I had to purchase were the mini brown paper lunch bags and clothes pins. Everything else I had on hand. This project cost all of $4.00! And how convenient was it that the lunch bags came in a package of 25? Coincidence? I think not! Now….the real expense comes in the form of the little treats for each bag!

I’ve decided to insert treats the night before as they are hanging on our fireplace and since we use the fireplace nightly we don’t want to have a messy situation on our hands….

What do you think? Mission accomplished? I’ll let you know what the true critics will say……however, I think it will all depend on the treats each day brings!

Happily Giving Thanks

As many of you know The Geek and I hosted our family’s Thanksgiving this year. WOW! I meant to document much more to give you visual delights but I must say I fell a little behind….Here’s a little teaser though.

The Geek made a beautifully moist bird. Bless his heart, he was up at 5:00 AM prepping it. Not to mention the additional few days before hand giving it a bath and salt rub. To say that it was a hit is an understatement. I believe the best compliment was the family insinuating that we’ll be celebrating Christmas here as well.

My contribution was the rosemary roasted root vegetables. Aren’t those the prettiest fingerling potatoes you’ve ever seen?

All in all it was wonderful to have been the host for such an appreciative family. At the end of the day it wasn’t the decor, place setting, or lack of place cards that became the focus. It was truly the time spent with family and friends that I am thankful for. The food does come in at a close second!

DIY: Mason Jar Pies

The more I’ve explored Pinterest the more I’ve been inspired to be domestic. I recently found this cute idea of mason jar pies and thought it would be the perfect dessert for Thanksgiving Day dinner. So I had to do a practice run……and voila!

Not so bad huh? The Geek taste tested it and aside from the pie crust ratio being on the higher end to the apple filling he was pretty pleased. (Personally I prefer the high ratio, especially when cut with whipping cream). I took just one short cut with the pre-made pie crust. All in all it took no more than 15 minutes for the prepping and a total of 60 min. to bake.

One store bought pie crust package will cover six jars. Greasing the jars with butter will make it easier to release for serving. However, serving them in the jar is a great idea!

Apple pie filling:

2 cups finely diced apples

1 tbsp nutmeg

1 tbsp flour

1 tbsp cinnamon

4 tbsp sugar

a couple of diced butter to top off each pie

Cover with pie crust and bake at 375 degrees for 50-60 minutes. Enjoy!
